Has anybody noticed there's a election on?

Postby cygnusalpha » 24 Apr 2010, 17:10

Maybe a subject that doesn't interest the forum, if so fair enough. But I have a particular reason for asking whether it's on- or off-topic for this place. What's the view?

I'm not going to flog you any party propaganda, quite the opposite. But I do have a message.

Perhaps a mod could tell me whether I should p*ss off before I start, or whether it's OK?

Ta.

Ah, cheers. Hadn't noticed the debates heading. Duh.

OK here it is. I agree with Tom3218, that that they've all let us down. Expletive deleted. When the election was announced I realised I couldn't vote for any of them. So, after bleating about it for a while, I decided to do something.

That something was to put myself on the ballot. It's cost me £500 of my own hard-earned but I wanted to make a point. I'm standing as an independent candidate in Sherwood constituency, which is where I live, and am standing on a None Of The Above ticket. Basically, if you can support a party, then vote for them. If you can't but you still want to vote, register a genuine protest vote by voting for me.

My blog is here: http://sherwoodsaysnota.wordpress.com/ and there is also a Facebook page you can 'like' if you feel inclined. Obviously it would be nice if any Sherwood voters put their mark beside my name, come 6 May.

Russ Swan - Independent candidate for Sherwood

End of political broadcast. Thanks for listening.

Ah Russ mate, nice one and good luck. Wish I was able to vote there, you'd get it. I'll be voting 'no confidence' though I know it's technically nothing more than a spoiled paper. I've got an FB group running for this (called 'no confidence, election 2010') - so far I have 200+ members. Was seriously hoping for more so I could push the group to the press, but hundreds won't do it - need 1,000s.

All the best fella. It's a shame the public's apathy to our political system will probably lose you your deposit. Mind you, you just never know what could happen!

cheers Greg, I've joined your group. The Evening Post has picked up a little on my story - I'm mentioned in today's (Saturday's) editorial leader.

But yes, I expect will lose my deposit. There's certainly no way I will win. Still think it's worth doing though.

I do too - I'm very impressed, it's a chance for folk in your area to have a proper protest vote option. Outstanding.

Outstanding Russ.

Sadly, up in poor benighted Wallasey, I have a choice of:

1 - a Tory councillor with a crap attitude towards anyone who happens to be unemployed or poor and appears to be totally incapable of answering correspondence from the folk she is supposed to be representing (that'll be me then),

2 - a new labour lesbian box-ticker (the current MP) selected on a women only shortlist and repaying the debt by towing the party line to the Nth degree in Common's votes,

3 - the local liberal candidate who has kept himself to himself so much that I had to look up the wiki entry on my ward to even discover his name

4 - the UKIP vote splitter standing on a "I'm not racist but..." ticket, and

5- Some independant who I'd never even heard about, but who appears to be an evangelist of some stripe.... God only knows what he's pushing.

None of these represents my interests, or indeed the interests of many of their putative constituents.

I can't vote for any of them, so I will be voting None Of The Above like I have done numerous times before... just a shame you don't have a local party office here Russ.
